What are the main disadvantages of a one-handed backhand?

By Jeff Cooper, About.com

Question: What are the main disadvantages of a one-handed backhand?
Answer: Compared to a two-hander:

  • more difficult to learn for most
  • generally more difficult to produce topspin, especially on balls met between waist and chest height
  • requires more strength to generate power and keep racquet stable
  • point of contact farther forward than two-hander, which allows less time
  • longer backswing generally makes it more difficult to time clean contact on return of serve for any given degree of return aggressiveness
  • harder to change direction of shot at the last second
  • more strain on dominant arm: poor one-handed backhand form is a leading cause of tennis elbow
