Where should I aim defensive volleys?

By Jeff Cooper, About.com

Question: Where should I aim defensive volleys?
Answer: You can't expect to put defensive volleys away, so your main concern is to put yourself in the best situation for the next volley. You're always better positioned for a volley when the ball is relatively straight in front of you, so it's better to hit defensive volleys down the line than crosscourt. Also keep them deep to gain more time to react to the next ball and low to force your opponent to make that next ball rise toward you.
