Where should I aim overheads?

By Jeff Cooper, About.com

Question: Where should I aim overheads?
Answer: Hit most overheads
  • hard, aiming roughly four feet inside either deep corner, which gives you enough depth plus enough margin for safety
  • a little less powerfully and shorter, but sharply angled
On short lobs that set you up nicely, if you have enough power, you can also "spike" the ball down into the court hard enough that it will bounce over your opponent's reach at the baseline. This is fun to do, but it carries the risk of either hitting down too sharply and hitting the net or not hitting hard enough and giving your opponent a chance at the ball.
